The French press, commonly known as “Bodum”, is one of the easiest and most popular brewers on the market. The metal filter allows the finest particles as well as some of the oils to pass through, giving a full-bodied and rich cup but often a little less nuanced than with a paper filter infuser. Here we share with you our favorite recipe, which requires patience, but which will give you a clear cup and a syrupy body in return.
Brewing Parameters
This recipe is for two cups. Dry:50g of coffee Liquid:700g/ml of water Ratio:1:14 Water temperature:206°F (20s after boiling) Extraction time:8 mins Grind:medium-coarse (similar to automatic filter)
What You’ll Need
French press coffee maker
Filtered water
Kettle
Burr mill
Balance
Stopwatch
Spoon
Freshly roasted coffee
Pro Tip
You shouldn't have much resistance when squeezing the plunger. If so, try a slightly coarser grind.
It is possible to make a smaller quantity. You simply have to make sure to keep the ratio of 1g of coffee to 14g of water.
Step N°1
Fill the kettle with fresh filtered water and bring it to a boil.
Step N°2
Fill the brewer with boiling water to warm it up. Return the water to a boil. Meanwhile, grind 50 g of coffee.
Step N°3
Once the water reaches boiling, wait 20 seconds. Meanwhile, empty the water and place the ground coffee in the brewer. Tare the scale to zero.
Step N°4
Start the timer and pour 700 g of water over the coffee.
Step N°5
Stir the coffee and water with a stick or spoon so that all the grounds are submerged.
Step N°6
At 4 minutes, stir again and remove any foam and grounds floating on top of the liquid. Wait another 4 minutes to allow the suspended sediments to settle at the bottom.
Step N°7
At 8 minutes, slowly press the plunger down, serve immediately, and enjoy!
