Volcan Azul is a truly remarkable farm located in the Alajuela region of Costa Rica and overseen by Alejo Castro. The fifth generation of his family to tend the land, Alejo is an incredibly skilled producer, and the estate has a rich history that clearly dates back to the late 19th century.

The farm produces a wide variety of varieties and cultivars, such as Catuai, Caturra, Obata, Villa Sarchi and Gesha. Alejo continues to propagate new varieties each season, with the aim of continually experimenting and adding diversity to his harvest.

Alajuela benefits from varied microclimates and altitudes, which create optimal conditions for coffee growing. The region's varying altitudes allow different types of Arabica coffee varieties to thrive, each bringing unique flavors and characteristics to the beans.

A hybrid of the famous Sudan Rume variety and a research variety derived from a Sarchimor, the H1 variety has both the delicate floral and red fruit notes of Sudan Rume, while retaining the intensity of flavor and richness of body. This variety has a very high yield with very good quality potential if planted in healthy soil and at altitudes from 1300 meters, with resistance to rust. Well suited to agroforestry.

The honey process, indicates that the skin of the cherries is removed, but the flesh is kept inside. Red honey process coffees contain much more mucilage. This results in a coffee that is richer in flavor and body.
